Mindfulness Taught to NYU MBA Students

Mindfulness training could help your business leaders to:

NYU’s Business School has some new courses and programs with the goal of “transforming the lives of the next generation of our business leadership.” Founded through Stern’s Leadership Development program in partnership with NYU’s Global Spiritual Life Program, MiB’s (Mindfulness in Business) new initiative is already impacting MBA students.

This pilot program was created to help students leverage their desire for success while becoming a part of saner, more sustainable, and ethical workplace practices through mindfulness. The theory and technique of mindfulness is being tapped into not only to build skills in these future managers and leaders, but to also build their emotional intelligence.

In addition, an outcome of the pilot program showed those who grew their awareness about their own judgments could better understand how these ‘judgments’ may impact their ability to see a situation clearly while in the workplace.

Emotional Intelligence (EI) is a concept made popular by Daniel Goleman, author of Emotional Intelligence and has shown leaders with a high emotional intelligence are at a minimum more self-aware, self-confident, and have better self-control and therefore make better leaders.

Practicing mindfulness is one of the ways to build your emotional intelligence by connecting to the feelings side of leadership and not just the intellectual aspects.

As increasing numbers of businesses, Fortune 500 companies and CEOs consider mindfulness essential to successful management, as with anything worth doing well, this key well being tool needs to be taught and practiced to be most effective.

NYU’s Business School hopes future business leaders will be more mindful of their own thoughts, behaviors and actions. Or as we are reminded through one message they include based in the teachings of Buddha, “The mind is everything. What you think, you become.”
