Emotional Intelligence Defined
Emotional intelligence has been defined Peter Mayer and John Salovey as the ability to perceive emotions, to access and generate emotions so as to assist thought, to understand emotions and emotional knowledge and to reflectively regulate emotions so as to promote emotional and intellectual growth.1
Do I need to improve my EI?
Unfortunately, individuals don’t always know when they need to improve their EI. Some common indicators may include:
- Difficulty maintaining a healthy work/life balance
- Strained relationships with coworkers
- People frequently misunderstanding what you are trying to say
