Did you know Emotional intelligence (EI) has been identified as a key factor in improving patient outcomes, care team relationships and organizational effectiveness — as well as impacting resilience? In addition to affecting professional and personal success, EI has an impact on organizational performance and culture.
Emotional intelligence has been defined Peter Mayer and John Salovey as the ability to perceive emotions, to access and generate emotions so as to assist thought, to understand emotions and emotional knowledge and to reflectively regulate emotions so as to promote emotional and intellectual growth.
Do the people I coach/counsel need to strengthen their EI?
Unfortunately, individuals don’t always know when they need to improve their EI. Some common indicators may include:
- Difficulty maintaining a healthy work/life balance
- Strained relationships with coworkers
- People frequently misunderstanding what you are trying to say
