Physician Burnout:
A Silent Crisis
in Healthcare

Physician burnout is a significant problem that often goes unaddressed and underreported, with many physicians suffering in silence despite the potential negative impacts on both patient care and their own well-being.

  • 63% of physicians report burnout symptoms
  • 50% are at full capacity & 34% are overextended
  • 8 in 10 physicians face multiple barriers to mental health care
  • 63% experience stigma around seeking help
  • $500K+ to replace a single physician
  • $1M+ for a 6-month vacancy
  • Burnout linked to 2.5x increased risk of medical errors & decreased patient satisfaction

Behind these numbers are real people: caregivers who entered medicine to help and heal others but now find themselves struggling, at work and at home. As barriers to mental health support persist, the ripple effects impact not just physicians themselves, but entire healthcare workforces and communities who depend on them.

Protecting the Well-Being of Healthcare Providers

Physician burnout demands legislative action to protect the well-being of healthcare providers and improve patient care.

  • Confidentiality. Legislation allows for confidential resources for physicians, residents, advanced practice providers, and nurses seeking help to address career fatigue and other mental health issues.
  • Reporting. Those participating in such programs will not be reported to the state’s Board of Medicine unless they are not competent to practice or a danger to themselves or others.
  • Privilege. Consultations which take place under the scope of such programs are considered privileged communications.
